The crime rate, as expected, went down. There were very little vehicles running around the main streets.
Let me describe my experience while the fight was going on and some of the common Filipino commentaries after the fight.
It was like a holiday here. All stopped their work and took the lunch break just to see Manny fight.
Truth is I was traveling while Manny's fight was going on. To my surprise, no traffic happened. It was like flying on a plane. No traffic whatsoever.
Sure thing, Manny fought. But to most Filipinos were dismayed at his performance. I only witnessed the last 4 rounds of their bout. My heart was pounding when Manny hit Marquez a lot of times. But Marquez being a counter puncher just replied to Manny flurry.
Many people, in the public viewing place, said that Marquez has to knock out Manny before the belt is awarded to him.
Manny looked very exhausted when I saw him during the in-between-rounds. I even saw Manny feeling the pain when the corner man touched the wound on his eye.
Fast forward, at the end of the 12 rounds, Manny was "still the Champion!" The crowd in the place where I watched yelled aloud! It was like somebody hit a homerun in a closely fought baseball game, or a three point shoot where the defeated team was leading by two. It was a victory by the Filipino Champ and the Filipino pride is with him.
I overheard some tell their compadres that Marquez really won the fight if Manny was not the reigning champ. Marquez really punched Manny quite a lot of times. Some "score-minded" people gave the majority of scores to Marquez. They said Marquez out boxed and out played the champ. The Mexican fighter really prepared to face Pacquiao. It was like Marquez read every move of Manny.
So much for the commentaries, Manny was declared as the winner. We can't expect always an explosive fight from Manny. But he did his best, I guess. He lifted the Filipino pride to the international arena. We should be thankful to Manny. The day was peaceful and happy, mostly.
A joke I overheard,
"If Manny had lost, 100% crime rate will happen! Many will be very angry cause...tumaya kasi sila kay Manny. At alam mo na ang mangyayari 'pag natalo sa pustahan ang Pinoy...siguradong away yan!"Congratulations to Manny! Kung pwede lang sana sabihin ko yan kay Manny in person... :)
