What is a Cross-browser site?

When a software work on difference kinds of operating systems, it is called a crossplatform program. Likely, if a website works for different browsers, it is a cross-browser site.

The work of a website developer is much easier if browsers were the same. Most internet browsers are similar in function and design, most of the time they have many minute differences in recognizing and displaying websites. Example, Safari uses a different HTML rendering engine than Internet Explorer or Firefox or Chrome. Meaning the browsers display the same webpage with slightly different text formatting. Since not all internet browsers read the same HTML tags, some formats may not be read at all in a non-compatible browser. Moreover, browsers translate JavaScript differently, which means one script may work in a browser, but not in another.

Facebook 'to seek consent for privacy changes'

Facebook's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has defended
its privacy policies
Privacy campaigners have welcomed a report that Facebook is to ask users to opt into any changes in the way it uses their personal information.

The social network previously announced alterations to its members' settings without asking for fresh consent.

The website is changing its policy after an investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Facebook is not commenting on the story at this time.

The report suggests the site has also agreed to privacy audits by an independent organisation over the next 20 years.

However, it says the FTC does not prescribe how consent should be obtained.
Suspicion

"Facebook has historically been extremely resistant to transparency in its own operations, so we welcome measures that would force the company to obtain express consent of its users," said the London based advocacy group Privacy International.

"However, it seems likely that the FTC's demands will only present a temporary obstacle in the path of Facebook's ambitions to collect its users' information.

"Faced with reams of small print, most users are likely to automatically agree to policy changes, with each change bringing us one step closer to Zuckerberg's vision of a privacy-free future."

The website's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, was questioned about the firm's privacy policies on the US television network PBS' Charlie Rose show earlier this week.

"You have control over every single thing you've shared on Facebook," he said, "You can take it down."

He also said other search engines and advertising networks gathered "huge amount of information" about internet users through cookies, which he claimed was "less transparent than what is happening at Facebook".

Complaints

The FTC's intervention is being linked to the Washington-based campaign group, Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).

It filed a complaint with the commission in December 2009 claiming that privacy setting changes "violate user expectations, diminish user privacy and contradict Facebook's own representations".

EPIC noted that the website's users, security experts and others had voiced opposition to the change.

The organisation filed a follow-up complaint in 2010 claiming the social network had violated consumer protection law.

This year, EPIC also asked the FTC to investigate Facebook's use of facial recognition software on users' uploaded photographs and changes that gave the firm "far greater ability to disclose the personal information of its users to its business partners".
Knock-on effects

Facebook says it has more than 800 million members who have used the site at least once in the past 30 days.

The Reuters news agency recently reported that the site's revenues totalled $1.6bn (£1bn) in the first six months of the year thanks to its popularity with advertisers.

Facebook does not release detailed results as it is not a publicly traded company, although there is speculation it will float its stock in 2012.

Legal experts say any settlement with the FTC is likely to have implications for other internet firms.

"Users are not social networking sites' primary customers, advertisers and marketers are," said Andrew Charlesworth, director of the centre for IT and law at the University of Bristol.

"While the FTC settlement indicates sites must be more open about the ways they make personal data available, and provide users with greater control, Facebook and others will already be rethinking the techniques they use to persuade users to keep their personal data publicly accessible."

144th Birthday of Marie Curie celebrated by Google

Google - the leading Search Engine Company celebrates the 144th birthday of Marie Curie. A very nice Google Doodle is presented today on its homepage to showcase the greatness of Marie Curie.

Let's get to know Marie Curie...

Marie Curie
Marie Curie (Maria Sklodowska-Curie) was the first person in history to obtain two Nobel Prizes in different areas of science (physics and chemistry). Marie Curie is known for her work with radioactivity and her discovery of radium. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Marie Curie was the first woman appointed to teach at La Sorbonne (University of Paris) and the first woman in France to achieve her doctoral degree.

Marie Curie was born on November 7 1867 and moved to Paris when she was 24 to study science and become a naturalized French citizen. At the university, she met another instructor to whom she would eventually marry named Pierre Curie. The two worked together studying radioactive compounds and refining uranium pitchblende ore. Besides radium, Marie Curie also discovered a new substance polonium, which she named after her native homeland of Poland.

In 1903, Marie and Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel all received the Nobel Prize in physics for their research on radiation. Marie Curie was the first woman to ever receive the Nobel Prize. In 1911, Marie Curie received her second Nobel Prize, this time in chemistry for the discovery of radium and polonium. Other than Marie Curie, Linus Pauling is the only other person to ever received two Nobel Prizes.

Curie intentionally decided not to patent the process to extract and purify radium, leaving the door open to the scientific community to study the process unhindered. While being a brilliant scientist, Marie Curie also suffered from depression and kidney problems.

During World War I, Marie Curie pushed for the use of radiography field units for the treatment of wounded soldiers. The units included tubes of radon gas that Curie purified herself. Promptly after the war had started, Marie Curie don't she and her husband's gold Nobel Prize medals to help with the war efforts. On July 4, 1934, Marie Curie died of leukemia, which may have been caused by her exposure to radiation.

Rumor Has It …

Rumor has it that Marie Curie actually invented clog dancing and did so frequently in the bars and restaurants of Paris, much to the chagrin of her husband, Pierre. In fact, it was the clog dancing that contributed to his untimely death in the streets of Paris as he was racing to get away from the noise and clatter of the clogs at the time.

In a completed fabricated, yet entertaining bit of balderdash, it was rumored that after Pierre's death, Marie Curie had begun an affair with a dwarf named Tito from the African north coast. Upon witnessing a drunken bit of consensual dwarf tossing at the local bar, Marie broke off the affair saying that her new love interest had offended her sense of decency and propriety.

Inflation rose to 5.2% in October due to tyhoons

Credit to: Riza T. Olchondra, Philippine Daily Inquirer

The annual inflation rate accelerated to 5.2 percent in October from 4.8 percent in September on the back of price increases in heavily weighted food items, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Economists attributed the higher food prices to farm damage and transport disruptions due to recent typhoons but expected the inflation rate to stay within the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) target range. Hence, economists said, they would not expect any changes in monetary policy.

“Third-quarter performance will be slightly better than [the second quarter] but the rise in inflation can be attributed to cost-push factors such as supply constraints and rise in production input cost—not demand-pull factors associated with the economic growth and recovery. I think the BSP will maintain policy rates because the average inflation is still within the 3 to 5 percent range,” according to Cid L. Terosa, economist at the University of Asia and the Pacific.

Penguins make waves in Manila Ocean Park

Credit to: MARLON ANTHONY R. TONSON, GMA News

The Manila Ocean Park’s latest animal attraction makes everyone smile from ear to ear, especially the children visiting the recreation facility.

The Humboldt Penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) – a South American species from the coastlines of Chile and Peru, close to Antartica – had even delighted United States of America ambassador to the Philippines Harry Tomas, who was interviewed by GMA News reporter JP Soriano.

“I got to feed the penguins fish, and that was great," said Tomas, adding that it was his first time to see the Antarctic birds up close – and in tropical Philippines!

This species is named after the cold water current the penguins swim in, which is named after the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. They are medium-sized penguins, growing to 56–70 cm (22–28 in) in length and weighing of 3.6-5.9 kg (8-13 lbs).

Bong Revilla says Ramona's flight is a 'sign of guilt'

Credit to: Jon Carlos Rodriguez, abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. said on Friday that the departure of his half-sister Ramona Bautista from the Philippines is a sign of guilt.

Revilla said Ramona, who has been tagged by police as one of the suspects in the murder of her own brother, aspiring actor-politician Ramgen Bautista Revilla, should have faced the investigation instead of leaving the country.

“I was shocked just like everyone. Talagang hindi kami makapaniwala. Itong pag-alis niyang ito is a sign of guilt. Hindi siya dapat umalis. Dapat hinarap niya itong imbestigasyon kung talagang siya ay hindi guilty,” Revilla told ABS-CBN’s “Bandila.”
